Lesson Plan Five

In lesson three we provide the students with an opportunity to consolidate their understanding through the use of the Extension Activity Workbooks. The lesson plan includes personalised time for the students to develop their skills on their chosen instrument as well as play live with another Live Performance Vamp.

These plans are a guide to how you might wish to structure your Gigajam lessons and we would welcome any feedback you may have. We hope you find this resource of use.

Introduction

  • Go through some of the answers to Task Three from the Extension Activity Workbooks.
  • Set the students Task Four as their homework.
  • Use some of the Rhythm Studies to check the classes understanding by getting them to count and play through some rhythm section study pieces either by clapping or by playing their instruments.

Using the interactive whiteboard (IWB)

  • Use the IWB to demonstrate the Rhythm Section Studies.
  • Gather some examples of students recorded performances and use the IWB to discuss Analysis.

  • The continued development of rhythm and understanding of notes and note values.
  • Developing the students ability to interpret their progress using Analyser.

Personalised Learning

Give the students time to work at their workstations working through their lessons and developing their instrumental skills on their first instrument. The students will be working on the skills contained in lessons one to five of their courses.

Guitar

Developing rhythm guitar playing using combinations of note values.

Developing palm muting skills by mixing accented and non-accented notes.

Increasing awareness of playing in time and controlling timekeeping.

Bass

Develop control of subdivisions in groove playing.

Create new rock grooves with different bass note patterns.

Extend development of left hand finger coordination in rock grooves.

Keyboard

Introduce the concept of inversions and use practically to develop 'economy of movement'

Develop left hand triads through the use of inversions

Introduce and begin to play chord progressions.

Drums

Develop control of subdivisions in groove playing.

Create new grooves with different hi-hat patterns.

Extend development of three way co-ordination in groove playing.

Live Performance Workshop (LPW)

Live Band Session

  • Create bands from the class and get the students to play Vamps One to Five from the LPW Book at the front of the class.

Suggestions

  • Identify four students to form a band and get them to play around Vamps 1-5 from the LPW book.
  • You may wish to use the Xtractor to support the students and rotate students to come and join the band.
  • You may wish to ask a student to operate the Xtractor software so that they run the session.
  • Feel free to creatively adjust the parts, such as:
    1. Ask the drummer to play a different drum fill.
    2. See if a second keyboardist can play scales through the changes.
    3. Encourage a second guitarist to play using different rhythms through the changes.
