Numbering of the fingers on the fretting hand (the hand that plays on the fretboard)

Numbering the fingers of the fretting hand.

Looking at the picture to the right, you will see the fingers of the fretting hand are numbered from one (1) to four (4), with the index finger being number one through to the little finger being number four.

The thumb has no number and is referred to as the thumb (rarely used on the fretting hand).
